Hanover Borough was among 73 municipalities in the state to receive a portion of a $30 million program to improve traffic signals.

The borough will receive $328,120 towards comprehensive upgrades to traffic signals along the borough's busy Eisenhower Drive, according to a release by PennDOT. The signals on Eisenhower Drive being upgraded will improve access to two major shopping centers, the release said.

The money comes as part of an annual “Green Light-Go” grant program by PennDOT, which focuses on upgrading signals with newer detection technology. These upgrades allow the signals to respond in real time to traffic conditions, the release said.

The grant funds can be utilized for light-emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal retiming, developing special event plans, monitoring traffic signals, as well as upgrading traffic signals.

This year, the grants were awarded to 73 municipalities for a total of $30 million, the release said. Hanover Borough was the only municipality in Adams or York counties awarded the funds for the 2024 program.

The projects will be funded through the appropriation for fiscal year 2024-25, the release said.
