Oregon governor orders flags to half-staff in honor of late Senate President Peter Courtney
Gov. Tina Kotek ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset on Thursday, July 18, in memory of the life and service of Peter Courtney, the former president of the Oregon State Senate and longest-serving state legislator in Oregon history. “President Courtney truly lived by example: he cared deeply for our state, for the people that he worked with, and above all, for his family with vigor, compassion and courage,” Kotek said in a written statement. “It was an honor to serve alongside him and I know his legacy will live on through his many efforts on behalf of Oregonians and in the memory of those who knew him.” Courtney died Tuesday, July 16. He was 81. Kotek’s office first announced the news that Courtney died of complications from cancer in his home, surrounded by family.

Federal officials allow Oregon to offer Medicaid services to those behind bars
Federal officials have approved Oregon’s request to offer free Medicaid services for addiction and some other services to people who are on the verge of being released from jail or prison, something that’s prohibited by federal law. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Oregon will offer the new program, along with Illinois, Kentucky, Utah and Vermont. They’re joining California, Massachusetts, Montana and Washington state which first piloted programs offering some Medicaid services to people about to be released. ...
2024 Tribal Stewards participants get to work in eastern Oregon
Hands-on natural resources and restoration education program serving inter-tribal young adults. Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA) and Lomakatsi Restoration Project have announced the launch of the 2024 Tribal Stewards program, which brings together a nine-member inter-tribal crew to work on ecological restoration projects in Oregon’s high desert. Serving members of the Burns Paiute Tribe, Klamath Tribes, Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Duck Valley Indian Reservation, and Pit River Tribe, the Tribal Stewards program is providing valuable natural resource field experience to support the growing restoration workforce in eastern Oregon.
