HARBOR SPRINGS — Olivia Flynn’s life has always been about basketball.

There’s love and passion attached that’s noticeable every time she takes the court for the Harbor Springs girls’ basketball team.

But with one final season with the Rams approaching, it was time for Flynn to focus on where she would be continuing that love at the college ranks.

And Flynn has found that home down the western edge of the state.

The three-time first team all-state guard recently made the announcement she’s committed to Western Michigan University.

“I just felt like it was the perfect fit for me,” Flynn said. “It felt like home and felt like the coaches really wanted me there. When I went down for a visit, I enjoyed meeting the girls when I got the chance to meet them. It just fit the like perfect fit.”

The past three years have flown by for Flynn, with her becoming the program’s all-time leader in points with 1,758 scored and another year to add to it.

Now with a collegiate home figured out in Kalamazoo, Flynn is excited and relieved the pressure is off a bit.

“It’s a huge relief,” she said. “It’s super motivating to know that hard work does pay off and that God has a plan. You just stay patient and good things will happen.”

As a junior, Flynn averaged 26.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.9 assists from her point guard position, while shooting 35 percent from 3-point range.

Not only will Flynn be back to add to her career, she’ll be doing so with a Harbor Springs team that’s loaded with starters and talent back after advancing into regionals a year ago. The Rams have been together this summer, getting in some team camps and finding success.

She’s also been busy on the AAU circuit in the months since the high school season closed, playing for the Michigan Mystics S40 team.

“June is usually reserved for high school team camps,” Flynn said. “We did a couple team camps with the high school. (For travel), we just had a tournament in Mount Pleasant on Sunday and won it all. That was exciting. We’re getting ready to head to Cincinnati for five days, then Kentucky after that.

“It’s going to be super busy, but I love it. It’s what I love to do. That’ll be it for AAU. It’s really sad for that chapter to end.”

With one more chapter of high school ball left and a new home picked out with WMU, Flynn is all in on making the 2024-25 season her most memorable yet, which is saying something with the career she’s had.

“We took some huge steps this year,” she added. “We have a lot of good pieces, a lot of good players and super motivated girls, super talented girls. It’s exciting for me that for my senior year, we’re going to make a run and have some fun while doing it.”
