Fueled by crowd’s energy, athletes compete in Big Sky Community Rodeo
Editor’s note: Outlaw Partners, publisher of Explore Big Sky, is the producer of Big Sky Community Rodeo. Friday night’s Big Sky Community Rodeo began with a low hum overhead. As the hum grew louder, the audience turned to see a helicopter dangling the American flag, which circled the Big Sky events arena to the tune of the national anthem. As with any Western roundup, after the color guard, attention soon turned to the dirt—it was time for a rodeo, after all.
Mayor of Missoula included in leadership initiative

The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative provides local leaders the tools to strengthen city hall, encourage collaboration between departments and improve the lives of citizens.

Laurel Chamber asks for public's help in keeping kids safe at parade
Fourth of July in Laurel, Montana - a small town celebration on the grandest of scales. Thousands of people pour into Laurel for the annual parade, pancake breakfast, Chief Joseph run, vendor and food truck event and, of course, the best fireworks show in the state. Laurel’s Chamber of Commerce handles all but the breakfast and fireworks for the holiday. This massive undertaking rests on the shoulders of Chamber Director, Camilla Story, the Chamber Board of Directors and a handful of volunteers.
USPS opens Big Sky post office
This morning, July 15, the United States Postal Service opened its new post office in Big Sky, the community’s first federally operated post office. The post office is located at 110 Meadow Village Dr., around the corner from the now-retired Big Sky Post Office, which operated for decades under contract with USPS—the old location will keep its P.O. box lobby open through Saturday, July 20, to allow P.O. box-holders to pick up remaining mail.

Powell Baseball Player Set To Return After Suffering Life-Threatening Rattlesnake Bite
Powell resident Jhett Schwahn, 19, is thankful he always wears long pants when he hikes. Earlier this month, it might’ve saved his life from a rattlesnake bite. On July 8, Schwahn and his girlfriend were hiking down from the summit of 8,123-foot Heart Mountain in northwest Wyoming when Schwahn was suddenly bitten by a rattlesnake in the late afternoon hours. He heard no rattle from the reptile that pounced out from a bush near the trail.
Haze in Jackson Hole coming from wildfires in Idaho, Oregon and Montana
JACKSON, Wyo. — For those wondering where the haze that’s settled in Jackson Hole is coming from, the answer is wildfires to the west of the valley. The smoke from several large wildfires blazing in eastern Oregon, central Idaho and southern Montana is blowing east and settling in the valley, according to Brett McDonald, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Riverton, Wyoming.
