Aurora’s pallet shelters for people experiencing homelessness, which only allow a maximum 30-day stay, have been cycling the same individuals in and out, city staff told council members Thursday. Many return to street encampments when their time in the pallet shelter runs out, Jessica Prosser, homeless services director for the city, said. Then, the city sweeps the encampment again, and they get to come back to the shelter for another 30 days, Prosser explained. This process can repeat multiple times.

Since July 1, 2024, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), 174 children have been reported missing in the U.S. Since January 1, 2024, there was a total of 1,445 reported missing in the country.

About 80 people overtook Aurora’s City Council meeting Monday, causing the mayor to recess the meeting three times in an effort to bring about order. The council then agreed to extend public invited to be heard beyond the one-hour time limit. The speakers showed up to chide the City Council for not punishing the officer that shot and killed Kilyn Lewis. Lewis was a suspect in a crime which is why police approached him. Body camera footage released by the Aurora Police Department showed Lewis did not have a gun and repeatedly yelled “I don’t have nothing!” with his hands in the air. Despite this, officer Michael Dieck killed him with a single shot from his rifle. Lewis never had more than a cell phone in his hand, the video showed.

I met with Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman Wednesday for lunch. It’s the second time we have lunched together this year. Coffman wanted to hear my thoughts on plans the city has for a homeless navigation campus. The city recently bought a hotel that they intend to transform into a homeless campus. Unlike other homeless hotels, guests will be classified and located in the hotel based on whether they are receiving case management, employment assistance and substance abuse and mental health treatment. People receiving services would receive better accommodations such as semi-private rooms and be placed on floors separate from those not ready to engage with case workers, Coffman said.
