David Makes Man Star Akili McDowell Charged With Murder in Houston Shooting

Akili McDowell, the star of OWN’s two-season coming-of-age drama David Makes Man , was arrested on Aug. 1 and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a man at an apartment complex in Harris County, Texas.

“On July 20, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an incident that occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex” in East Harris County, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported at the time. “An adult male … sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Suspect(s) fled the scene.”

Two weeks later, Gonzalez reported that homicide Investigators had charged McDowell, 21, with murder in the shooting death of Cesar Peralta, 20, who was unarmed. McDowell was in turn taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Jail on a $400,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court today.

The connection between McDowell and Peralta has yet to be determined, and the investigation is said to be ongoing. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at (713) 274-9100.

In a statement to Law&Crime , McDowell’s manager said, “[T]his is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy. I respectfully have no comment at this time.”

In addition to his title role on David Makes Man , which finaled three years ago, McDowell’s TV acting credits include The Astronaut Wives Club and Billions (where he played Savion Williams).
