DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– Some kids wrapped up a week-long summer camp in Dauphin County Friday a with a new appreciation for horses.

Saddle Up Harrisburg gives inner-city kids the opportunity to spend time on a farm working around horses for the first time. The goal is to get them interested in equestrian jobs, like horse training and riding while teaching them respect and responsibilities.

One camp director says she never met a horse before hearing about Saddle Up Harrisburg.

“I’m a city girl at heart, drawn to me because my then 2-year old wanted to ride, so I put the supermom cape on and decided lets find out about this, let’s learn about it, and ever since for the past 5 years we’ve been delving deeper and deeper,” camp co-director Wileen Amy-Scott said.

“First of all the horses are very nice, you get to ride, also just a nice experience here,” junior camp counselor Ben White said.

“They love all the different things we teach them, its ok to be different and be shy in the beginning, by the need they are a whole different kid,” Emily Twilley-Selvey of Prairie Fire Farms Foundation said.

Many of the horses on the farm were retired from Penn National race track, so they are well-trained and used to being around people.
