HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A historic day at a Dauphin County library as it’s renamed after a couple who found for civil rights. The Harrisburg’s Kline Library is now the ‘George & Hettie Love Memorial Library.’

“It is being named in honor of two local community members whose lives were dedicated to literacy and education,” said Dauphin Count Library System’s executive director, Ryan McCrory.

The ‘Love’s’ visited this library often with their family.

“To have this event naming in the library after my parents is just, is beyond comprehension for me,” said George and Hettie Love’s son, George Love Jr.

George and Hettie Love met at the University of Pennsylvania.

“My mother was the first black graduate of Wharton School of Business with an MBA in 1947,” said George Love Jr.

George Love became the first African American high school teacher in Philadelphia after getting a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD.

“I hope people come to this community, see Geroge & Hettie Love’s name on the building and imagine big possibilities for themselves as well,” said McCrory.

This is the first Dauphin County library system building named after African Americans.

“Today is also long overdue, we can celebrate that finally men and women of color are represented and remembered as key educational figures in Dauphin County,” said Mayor of Harrisburg Wanda Williams.

After the Love’s moved to Harrisburg in 1971, George Love supervised the desegregation of schools as assistant commissioner for basic education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
