Casey: Updates will help seniors get meals, support grandchildren

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) – A reauthorized Older Americans Act will make it easier for low-income seniors to access nutritious meals and provide new support for grandparents raising grandchildren.

The act, which was originally enacted in 1965, funds programs for older adults, including senior community centers, Meals on Wheels and home-and-community based services.

Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), who is chairman of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, said these new provisions will help long-term care facility residents and other seniors who are struggling to afford basic necessities.

Our Nations older adults have fought in our wars, raised our families, and built our communities,” Sen. Casey said in a statement. “They deserve our support as they age.”

The reauthorization bill includes provisions to help grandparents raising grandchildren by expanding federal support. Grandparents will now be entitled to support in caring for grandchildren up to 22 years old (compared to 18 years old previously).

The new provisions also include expanding grab-and-go meal options for seniors.
