A man is in critical condition after being hit by an SUV crossing the street in Bridgeport on Sunday night.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection of North Avenue and Center Street Extension just before 11:10 p.m. after receiving multiple calls reporting a pedestrian had just been hit by a black SUV, according to Sgt. Darryl Wilson of the Bridgeport Police Department . The callers said the pedestrian was unresponsive on the ground.

Wilson said officers were assisted by members of the Bridgeport Fire Department and American Medical Response at the scene, where they treated the pedestrian before he was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center. The victim, a 45-year-old Bridgeport man, suffered serious injuries and was listed in critical condition, according to Wilson.

The 38-year-old Bridgeport man who was driving the SUV did not report any injuries. He remained at the scene and has been cooperative, Wilson said.

A preliminary investigation found that the SUV, a 2012 Audi Q7, was being driven east when it approached the 1200 block of North Avenue and struck the pedestrian as he was trying to cross the street from North Avenue to Center Street Extension, according to Wilson. The collision occurred in the eastbound lane, Wilson said.

The Bridgeport Serious Crash Investigation Team responded to reconstruct the collision.

    The crash remains under investigation.
