A CT mural is being covered up for Election Day because it features a presidential candidate

Just weeks before voters head to the polls , the town of Bloomfield has announced they will be covering up a large mural featuring Kamala Harris on the side of a polling center to comply with state election laws.

Town officials said that they will be making “temporary façade adjustments” to the Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center . The center, located at 330 Park Ave., serves as an Election Day polling site for Bloomfield Residents in District 1.

The town said they will be temporarily covering up a Racial Equity Mural that depicts former President Barack Obama, Anika Noni Rose, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dwight Freeney, and Vice President Kamala Harris. The mural was painted in 2021 by RiseUP for the Arts.

Due to Harris being a presidential candidate, the mural on the building will be covered on Tuesday, Nov. 5, while the location is in use as a polling site, the town said in a press release. The town said the temporary facade will be removed after Election Day.

“The Town of Bloomfield is extremely proud to celebrate and honor the achievements of Black individuals both locally and nationally,” said Bloomfield Town Manager Alvin D. Schwapp, Jr.

“However, ensuring that a polling site is fair means protecting every voter’s right to cast their ballot without interference, intimidation, or bias. Fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and a secure, transparent polling environment is essential for maintaining trust in the process.”
