    Gas leak prompts evacuations of day care, apartments in Hartford

    HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A gas leak led to the precautionary evacuation of roughly 50 people from a day care and apartment buildings Tuesday morning, according to Hartford fire officials.

    In a statement shared at 10 a.m., fire officials said the leak had been stopped, and people were being allowed back into the surrounding buildings.

    Fire crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Laurel Street around 8:30 a.m. for an active gas leak in an unoccupied multi-family unit that was under renovation.

    Connecticut Natural Gas reported high readings in the dwelling, fire officials said.

    Fire officials said the property was evacuated, and firefighters did not make entry. Out of precaution, crews evacuated several surrounding apartment buildings and a day care.

    CT Transit was requested for temporary shelter.
