HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Hartford’s assistant police chief will oversee the department while the city searches for a new leader, Mayor Arunan Arulampalam announced Wednesday.

Kenny Howell will take over for Chief Jason Thody, who said in March that he’s leaving the department. Thody had previously said that he would stay until a replacement is found.

Last month, members of the Hartford Police Union said that they’re “disgusted” with officers’ quality of life and that there was low morale in the department, placing the blame on Thody.

Howell has been in law enforcement since 1991, and with Hartford since December 2020. He oversees patrol operations, administrative services, professional standards and investigative services.

“I’m grateful to Mayor Arulampalam for the opportunity to serve under his administration and carry on the work HPD has been doing to serve the people of Hartford,” Howell said in a written announcement. “I look forward to working with the Mayor and HPD to hit the ground running and continue to deliver the crucial services our residents need as Acting Chief of Police.”
