Food insecurity increases in Hartford during the summer

As the summer months approach, Hartford faces a significant challenge: a dramatic increase in food insecurity. This seasonal spike in need puts immense pressure on local food pantries like Freshplace, which play a critical role in supporting our community. Understanding why food insecurity rises during the summer and the importance of supporting food pantries can help us take meaningful action to address this pressing issue.

During the school year, many children from low-income families rely on free or reduced-price school meals as their primary source of nutrition. When schools close for the summer, these meals are no longer available, leaving families struggling to fill the gap. Additionally, the summer heat often results in higher utility bills, which can further strain already tight household budgets, making it even more difficult for families to afford food.

Freshplace, a food pantry located in Hartford, steps in to provide much-needed support during these challenging months. Unlike traditional food pantries, Freshplace offers a client-choice model, allowing individuals to select healthy foods they need and prefer, which helps preserve dignity and reduces food waste. This innovative approach ensures that families receive nutritious and culturally appropriate food, promoting better health outcomes.

However, the increased demand during the summer can quickly deplete Freshplace’s shelves, making it essential for the community to rally together and support this vital resource. Donations of food and funds are crucial to keeping Freshplace stocked and ready to assist those in need.

To address this urgent need, Freshplace has launched the Fresh Food Fresh Start campaign. Summer is the most difficult time of the year for Freshplace donations. We need your help to keep our shelves full! All donations will make a significant impact in ensuring that Freshplace can continue to serve those who need it most. We believe that together, we can make a meaningful difference.

Over the next three months, our goal is to raise $10,000 and collect 5,000 pounds of food to help stock the shelves of Freshplace.

By supporting Freshplace, you are directly contributing to the fight against food insecurity in Hartford. Your generosity ensures that families have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive, even during the challenging summer months. Together, we can make a real difference in our community.
