From Territory To State: Iowa’s Journey To Statehood On July 4th
As big days go, July 4th is one of the big dogs. It's America's birthday. July 4th is not just a big day for America. It's also part of Iowa history. We learned from Iowa PBS that early in its journey, the U.S. Congress set up a roadmap for western lands to become states, remembering how the American colonists weren't exactly fans of British rule (cue the Revolutionary fireworks). WATCH: Can Iowa State navigate the non-conference and Big 12 schedule?
Iowa State's offseason last summer was not ideal. A gambling scandal sprung a surprise on the roster and cost the Cyclones a number of important players. They managed to avoid danger against the FCS's Northern Iowa, which has beaten Matt Campbell's team and scared it two other times, but they couldn't avoid the somewhat frequent non-conference landmine. Iowa State plays Iowa every year -- the COVID season was an exception -- and is 1-6 against the rival under Campbell. That includes a loss last season, but last season also included a loss to Ohio to go alongside 2020's head-scratcher against Louisiana-Lafayette.
