Thousands of SouthCoast Students Benefit from Junior Achievement
As part of our Southcoast Health Community Spotlight, we are excited to shine the spotlight on the non-profit organization Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts. Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts is a nonprofit organization that collaborates with the public, private, and education sectors to advance career readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy education for kindergarten to college-aged students across the region. Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts has grown its student education programs to over 6,000 students annually across 21 cities and towns.

The Massachusetts State Senate will vote Thursday on a voluminous 115-page healthcare oversight reform bill in part inspired by the crisis at Steward Health Care. This year, the House and Senate wrote bills to try to prevent similar problems from festering under the surface. The two bills remain significantly different. They only have 16 days to create and vote on a compromise bill when lawmakers are required to suspend any major business for the remainder of the two-year term.

A dog owner was facing an animal cruelty charge when she didn't euthanize her terminally ill dog against the veterinarian's orders. The court said it's not a crime. A woman who ignored her veterinarian’s advice to euthanize her dog but instead took him home to die did not commit a crime, the Supreme Judicial Court decided Monday in a case brought by state prosecutors and supported by multiple animal rights groups.

South Hadley Select Board approves adjustment counselor position
SOUTH HADLEY — During the Select Board meeting on July 9, the board approved a request for a middle school adjustment counselor for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. School administration requested $140,000 for an adjustment counselor for FY25 and FY26, $70,000 per year, which the Select Board approved during the meeting.
Officials identify victim in deadly Holyoke shooting
HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - The victim of the shooting on West Street in Holyoke has been identified as 38-year-old Dexter Ortiz of Holyoke. On July 9, just before midnight, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation. When they arrived, they found Ortiz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
