Vice President for Finance and Administration, Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank

As vice president for finance and administration at Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Hauppauge, Helen Liriano wears many hats. She is responsible for finance, accounting, inventory, human resources and technology functions. Her role is crucial to the food bank’s mission to feed Long Island’s food-insecure population.

Liriano provides the sound financial management, strategic planning and leadership necessary to help ensure Long Island Cares’ success in its role to provide nutritious meals to needy communities in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The organization, founded in 1980 by singer/songwriter Harry Chapin, distributes 12 million pounds of food annually.

After earning an accounting degree and a Master of Business Administration at Long Island University, Liriano began her career at People’s Alliance Credit Union, where she started as a teller and finished as the controller. Next, she spent 10 years at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, supervising finance, accounting and information technology functions as chief financial officer.

Liriano previously served on the board of 100 Hispanic Women of Long Island, where she continues as a member. She also contributed to the organization’s National Scholarship Committee. She is a member of the Long Island Chapter of the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants).

Committed to helping Long Island’s young women succeed, she has been a Girl Scout troop leader for nine years and contributes her expertise to the organization as unit treasurer. She has also held high-ranking positions in the PTA at the West Islip Union Free School District.
