Perry Parks & Rec Preparing for Debut Two-Week Summer Festival
Perry Parks and Recreation is ramping up for an inaugural event, starting next week. The organization states that the first two-week summer festival is set to happen from August 5th-16th. According to Perry Parks & Rec, several activities will be taking place including trips to the park, activities in the gym, and swimming in the pool. The time of the festival will be from 7am to 5pm with breakfast, lunch and a snack being served, but parents are welcome to pack pre-made meals for children.

PCM Top Ten Sports Stories of 2023-2024 School Year – #9
Claiming the number nine spot for PCM top sports stories of the 2023-2024 school year is senior basketball player Jake Wendt breaking the school record for rebounds in a game. Wendt broke the record against Greene County on January 29th where he recorded 21 rebounds. The Mustangs defeated the Rams in that game 62-57. Wendt moved into fourth all time for rebounds in PCM school history as he had 240 rebounds in his senior season which was first in the conference by a large margin. Wendt started all 23 games for the Mustangs last season and also averaged 12.2 points per game and 3.1 assists per game. Wendt earned first team all-conference honors and graduated this past spring. He will attend Iowa State University this fall.
Dallas Center Family Apart of Seven to Receive 2024 Way We Live Award

The Iowa State Fair has selected Brewer Farms out of Dallas Center as a representative for the 2024 Way We Live Award. According to the State Fair Association, this is the 16th year the award has been given out, recognizing 89 Iowa families. Brewer Farms has been in operation since 1875, serving Dallas Center with 125 cow/calf pairs. The fair association claims that family members are involved with the Dallas County Fair on some level each year.
Bedell home on West Lake Okoboji sells for $9.5 million
A lake front property in northwest Iowa that’s been on the market for a decade has sold for $9.5 million, the highest price on record for an Iowa home. The home in Spirit Lake, located on the shore of West Lake Okoboji, is known as Peace Harbor. It was built in 2004 for Tom Bedell. Bedell is the former CEO of Pure Fishing and son of the late Berkley Bedell, a former Iowa congressman who founded the company in 1937. The home has eight bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a media room named for Spirit Lake’s first movie theater and a replica of an Irish pub that can host up to 300 people.
UPDATE: Accused Columbia murderer who was captured in Iowa to go on trial this fall
An October murder trial has been set for a Columbia man charged with shooting a man to death in 2021 and then fleeing to Iowa. Boone County Circuit Judge Jeff Harris has scheduled the trial for 39-year-old Mark Alan Achterberg for October 1 through October 4. Achterberg is charged in Boone County Circuit Court with first degree murder and armed criminal action. He’s accused of shooting and killing Justin Stidham in November 2021.
Lake City Residents Are Reminded To Place Trash In Garbage Can For Scheduled Pick-Up Days
City officials of Lake City wish to remind residents not to leave trash just placed on the curb for pick up, as trash must be placed in an appropriate bin per city ordinance. During the last city council meeting, Daisy Hauling, who operates the city’s garbage collection services, estimated that nearly 50 percent of Lake City residents do not use a trashcan and just place the bags wishing to be disposed of on the curb. City Administrator Jacob Matthews says the municipal code was created to help keep the Lake City community beautiful, safe, and inviting for all by ensuring waste was adequately secured during trash pick-up days.
