PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Havertown native and Haverford High School product Katie Redding has enjoyed an extraordinary field hockey career at the University of Scranton. Her impact on the program has been so great that she was recently named Scranton’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The Woman of the Year honors a senior female athlete who has made an impact in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

    Redding considers herself lucky.

“I definitely have been blessed with a lot of opportunities,” she said. “Growing up in Havertown, field hockey is pretty heavy-based. My parents allowed me to play club, they paid for that, which is kind of where it all started.

“And, I have had such great teammates. I really lucked out when, throughout high school, club and especially college, I think I’ve been surrounded by coaches and girls that have inspired me to be the best version of myself that I can be, and they push me to reach new limits. And if I didn’t have the people that I have in my life, I don’t think I’d be nearly as accomplished as I am today.”

Redding is the only two-time All-American in program history. She is Scranton’s all-time leader in assists (24) and points (132), and she is second in program history in goals (54).

She said it’s an honor to be nominated.

“I got a call from the athletic department in the beginning of June and they were like, ‘Hey, we’re just letting you know that we are nominating you to be the NCAA Woman of the Year.’ And I kind of freaked out,” she recalled. “That’s a huge honor because it’s across all three divisions throughout the entire nation. So to even be considered among that list of talented women was just so, so surreal.

“I can’t believe that my name is gonna be in that pool of people.”

The NCAA Woman of the Year recipient will be announced in January 2025.
