    Hawaii has 37 contested state legislative primaries on August 10, 2024.

    There are 146 candidates, including 96 Democrats and 50 Republicans, running for 63 seats in the state legislature. The average number of total primary candidates in Hawaii from 2010 to 2024 was 158.5.

    Among them are 58 total incumbents, and 19 incumbents facing a primary challenger.

    Fifty-eight incumbents are running for reelection in 2024 and 19 of them are facing primary challengers. That is the lowest number of contested incumbents since Ballotpedia started tracking in 2010. Among the contested incumbents, 18 are in the House and one in the Senate.

    Four incumbents did not seek reelection in 2024, marking the lowest number of retirements since 2016. All four of the retiring incumbents are Democrats.

    Hawaii has had a Democratic trifecta since 2011. Since 1992, the state has had 25 years of Democratic trifecta and no Republican trifectas.
