Britney Spears and her two sons are taking steps toward reuniting after their heartbreaking estrangement .

The singer shares her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Over the past year, the boys have been living in Hawaii with their father, his wife Victoria Prince and their children Peyton and Jordan, after not seeing Britney for more than a year .

After rumors Britney had shared a phone call with her estranged sons on Mother's Day, Kevin's lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan admitted that reuniting the family was complex and would take time. He said: "Obviously a reconciliation or reunification is somewhat complex and can be a process that takes some time."

Speaking to Page Six , he added: "And the phone call was a good sign and a step in the right direction, but it's a process that takes more than just a phone call to accomplish."

He also denied rumors Britney flew to Hawaii for a surprise visit with her sons. He said: "While Kevin supports the boys having a relationship with their mother and is glad that the boys did finally have a phone conversation with her around Mother's Day, the reports that she flew to Hawaii and met with them are inaccurate."

Britney reportedly didn't object when her sons decided to relocate to Hawaii. In June last year, Kevin dismissed rumors he had moved to Hawaii to exploit a legal loophole extending Britney's child support obligations. He stated that the move was prompted by his wife landing a university job and him receiving DJ gigs.

A TMZ documentary released in May 2023 alleged Britney hadn't seen her sons for "well over a year" as Sean and Jayden were apparently embarrassed by their mother's provocative social media posts. In 2022, Jayden confessed that he and his brother hadn't visited their mother in several months.

He added: "I just want her to get better mentally. When she gets better, I really want to see her again." During most of Britney's controversial 13-year conservatorship, which concluded in November 2021, Kevin had primary custody of their sons.

The conservatorship placed her life, financial matters, and major decisions under her father's control. In her revealing memoir The Woman in Me, Britney admitted she "went along" with the conservatorship so she could continue seeing her sons. She penned: "Because I played by the rules, I was reunited with my boys."
