HONOLULU (KHON2) — The sudden spike in earthquakes that began over the weekend could result in temporary area closures, although there are no park closures in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park as of Monday.

Over the past day, the seismic activity has moved closer to the summit between Keanakākoʻi and Koʻokoʻolau craters.

Temporary area closures could occur if seismicity increases.

According to HVO, there are no signs of an impending eruption, but any significant increase in the occurrence of earthquakes and/or deformation could create new eruptive episodes.

If an eruption occurs, visitor should expect the eruption site to close immediately. The park will then assess if safe access is available.
