Coach Mizuguchi Resigns After Six Seasons With the Vulcans
UH Hilo Tennis head coach Kallen Mizuguchi resigned after six seasons leading both the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Following a four-year playing career with the Vulcans, the hometown native and UH Hilo alum was named interim head coach for both of the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs in Feb. 2019, guiding the men’s team to a Pacific West Conference Championship runner-up finish followed by the first of two NCAA Championship Semifinalist placements. Mizuguchi was given the permanent role in June and later followed up in 2021 by claiming the PacWest Conference title.

County sets up encampment for homeless in downtown Hilo
Hawaii County has begun setting up a temporary encampment to house homeless people in downtown Hilo. While a more permanent shelter is scheduled to open next to the Salvation Army on Ponahwai Street in August, the county has set up an array of tents on a county-managed lot just down the street.

Born in Honolulu, he was a businessman owning a gas station, bar and restaurant, founded Commercial Shelving Inc., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and recreational golfer. Visitation 10-11 a.m. Friday (June 12) at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Kailua, Oahu. Mass at 11 a.m. Survived by sons, Alvin Borges Jr. and Alan (Lisa) Borges of Honolulu; daughters, Donna (Russell) Montibon of Hilo, Debra Borges of Honokaa and Michelle (Alfred Jr.) Souza of Honolulu; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
