Security increased at Hilo tent encampment after drone survey operators attacked
HILO, Hawaii (Island News) -- The man arrested for attacking two drone workers contracted by the state of Hawaii was charged this week for assault and theft. Kukaua Bright is being held in lieu of $12,000 bail. According to the County of Hawaii, Bright is without permanent residence but not registered as an inhabitant of the encampment set up after the clearing of the canal area in Hilo.

County Kicks Off 49th Annual Kupuna Softball Tournament
Yesterday, the Department of Parks & Recreation’s Elderly Activities Division (EAD) kicked off the 49th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball Tournament. 21 teams and over 400 players from around the Hawaii County will participate in the two-day tournament which is being held at the Walter C.K. Victor Baseball Complex in Hilo.

Portion of Pauahi Street to temporarily close
A temporary closure is scheduled for a portion of Pauahi Street for crews to remove the existing bridge deck using heavy crane equipment. The road will be closed from Aupuni Street to Kamehameha Avenue starting July 22 to July 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During the closure, motorists are advised to use Manono Street or Ponahawai Street as alternative routes to access the back side of Pauahi Street.

Police arrest 20 for DUI
During the week of July 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; Hilo, four; Puna and South Kohala, three each; Ka‘u and North Hilo, one each.
