University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women golfers Isabella Ranches, Kailey Oki and Elle Otani were named to the 2023–24 Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team. The trio was among 1,497 women collegiate golfers from 412 programs recognized for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Oki and Otani received the honor a year ago.
Drone pilots conducting state survey allegedly assaulted in Hilo
Hawaii island police say two men performing drone survey work for the state last Tuesday were allegedly assaulted by two other men in Hilo. Police have since arrested one of two suspects — 32-year-old Kukaua Keli‘iho‘oluhi Kaupe Bright, for the alleged assault. Bright has no permanent address but is known to frequent the downtown Hilo area.

Marroquin named UH Vulcans head coach
HILO — Diego Marroquin has been named UH-Hilo men’s soccer head coach effective July 16 after leading the Vulcans to a 10-6-0 record in 2023. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity Patrick Guillen has entrusted me with at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo,” Marroquin said. “To be able to lead this fantastic group of men gives me an immense sense of pride. Hawai’i Hilo checks every box for me: premier location, competition at the highest level, amazing education and a department with collective investment to develop our student-athletes on and off the pitch.”
HCRA: Kai ‘Ehitu dominates regatta field again
Kai ‘Ehitu Canoe Club had another successful outing in Moko O Hawai‘i Outrigger Canoe Association’s sixth regatta of the 2024 season last weekend in Hilo. During Saturday’s outing, the club tallied 26 total medals and secured 12 gold — the most of any team competing. Kai ‘Ehitu also posted the most points of the day with 234.
