HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A group of wildland firefighters from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is in Washington State to help battle a large wildfire burning in the remote wilderness. Nearly 5,000 acres in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest have burned in the Pioneer Fire. At last check, the fire was 7% contained.
Squatter activity suspected cause of Puna house fire
A structure fire in Puna is potentially linked to squatters, according to Hawai‘i Island police. At 8:44 p.m. on Monday, Hawai‘i Firefighters responded to the blaze at the 15-0800 block of Kahakai Boulevard in Pāhoa. Once on scene, they found a 40-foot-by-25-foot single-story wood-framed structure with flames emanating from its eaves and windows.

Drone technology to aid restoration, resilience of Native Hawaiian fishponds
Scientists and kiaʻi loko (fishpond practitioners) have a new tool to aid their efforts to restore and ensure the resilience of Native Hawaiian fishponds. Researchers from the University of Hawai'i (UH) and fishpond stewards in Hilo, Hawai'i published a study in the Journal of Remote Sensing highlighting the use of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) to support integrated coastal zone management, including at cultural heritage sites.

HILO – Vulcans Tennis head coach Kallen Mizuguchi has recently resigned after six successful seasons in charge of both the Hawaii Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Following a four-year playing career with the Vulcans, the hometown native and UH Hilo alum was named interim head coach for both of the Hawaii Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs in Feb. 2019, guiding the men’s team to a Pacific West Conference Championship runner-up finish followed by the first of two NCAA Championship Semifinalist placements. Mizuguchi was given the permanent role in June and later followed up in 2021 by claiming the PacWest Conference title.
