State Rep. Mark Nakashima Dead At 61
Mark Nakashima, a Democrat who represented Hamakua, a portion of Hilo and Kaumana in the Hawaii House of Representatives, died Thursday in Honolulu. He was 61. According to his family, Nakashima had a longtime battle with diabetes which led to health complications. In January 2023 he received a kidney transplant.

Scientists and kiaʻi loko (fishpond practitioners) have a new tool to aid their efforts to restore and ensure the resilience of Native Hawaiian fishponds. Researchers from the University of Hawai‘i and fishpond stewards in Hilo, are using uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, to support integrated coastal zone management, including at cultural heritage sites.
