It's All About the Woods for Environmentally-Minded Youth This Summer

HAWTHORNE, NJ - The Borough of Hawthorne contains approximately 170 acres of public open space
for recreation and environmental protection. Of this total, about 50 acres are municipally owned, and the majority is used as active recreation facilities.

The Eight Acre Woods is an 8-acre conservation/natural area located adjacent to Goffle Brook Park. The natural area protects a small wetland area and woodland that is a sanctuary to wildlife. It is also a popular bird-watching spot.

The Eight Acre Woods is a park in the Borough of Hawthorne, Passaic County, New Jersey. It is situated near the Passaic County dog park and the Hawthorne Boys & Girls Club. These woods have benefited from at least 2 Eagle Scout projects.

One marked the trails, posted signs and produced the above trail map. Another project cleaned up the woods and repaired damage by vandals, replaced some of the trail signs, repaired structural damage to the observation decks and removed graffiti.

It’s a unique area with multiple habitats. The woods is clearly an ideal spot during migration for brimming with bird visits. The woods have several paths to make viewing birds easier, and they’ve been lovingly labeled with names like Robin Way and Blackbird Boulevard. On each of the Trail Signs, there is a QR Code that links the Eight Acre Woods Trail Map for easy access for participants.
