HAWTHORNE, NJ - The Rolling Stones have been around for 62 years but they have nothing on the Hawthorne Fire Department band, they've been making music since 1924!

Mayor John Lane presented the band with a proclamation recently, recognizing their long-standing service and entertainment to and for the community.

The band formed in 1924, organized by Charles Buono and Robert Highet, Sr. at Company No. 3 on North 8th Street.

In 1931, according to the proclamation, the band "participated in the Labor Day Firemen's Parade in Washington, DC where they were duly recognized in competition and continued to prosper during the Great Depression."

The band has given many concerts throughout the borough and for shut-ins in nursing homes throughout the state.

They never fail to entertain and are a part of the musical tradition in Hawthorne!
