Mayor Meets Kyle Bush, Nascar Star, at Hawthorne Chevy

    By Mayor John V. Lane,

On July 12, I had the pleasure of meeting two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch at a meet-and-greet event at Hawthorne Chevrolet. Kyle is now one of the new owners of the Hawthorne Chevy dealership, and we welcome him to Hawthorne and look forward to having him be a part of our borough. This weekend Kyle is racing at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

On Monday night, a meeting was held with representatives of the Board of Education to discuss the roller rink located at the high school athletic complex. The meeting was extremely positive and both sides left feeling there was a meeting of the minds to allow us to try to move this matter to a conclusion. It has been a long process. But we are confident that with our counterparts at the School Board we have come to a result that will keep roller hockey a strong and vibrant part of our recreation program for years to come. We ask that everyone be patient and respectful as we finalize this matter in the coming weeks.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has supplied Blue Envelopes and information flyers to be distributed through the Hawthorne Police Department to those individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is modeled from similar programs through the Tri-State area in attempt to enhance interaction between law enforcement and those drivers who have ASD. Blue Envelopes are in the police department’s communication center and will be distributed upon
    request.

Late last week, I inquired with our legislators about having a law mandating helmets be worn by operators of electric and/or gas operated scooters or e-bikes. This week I was informed that there is a proposed bill, Assembly Bill No. 3993, which would require the operators to have a helmet on. I spoke with Senator Corrado, and she is reviewing the possibility of writing a bill to go to the Senate floor; the Senator will get back to me. If you are an operator of a scooter or e-bike, please wear a helmet for your own safety. Also, to those of you driving a vehicle, please be aware of scooters and e-bikes. Some of the operators of the scooters and e-bikes tend to go in and out of traffic. I don’t want to see anyone get hurt.

Just a reminder that there are two buildings in town that have been designated as cooling stations: the library at 345 Lafayette Avenue (Monday through Thursday 9am to 9pm; Friday 9am to 5:30pm; and Saturday 9am to 5pm) and the ambulance corps building at 970 Goffle Road (Monday through Friday 9am to 1:30pm and from 6pm to 10pm).
