Today is the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics being held in Paris. The ceremony will be broadcast at 7:30pm on NBC. Hawthorne’s own Ethan Ramos will be competing in Paris, representing and wrestling for Puerto Rico. Ethan wrestled at Hawthorne High School where he was a state champion in his weight class, and he was an All-American at the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Please join me in cheering Ethan on. Wrestling competition begins on August 5. Good luck, Ethan, we are all very excited to watch you compete, and we are proud of you.

Congratulations to Chef Adam Weiss of restaurant F1rst at 112 Lincoln Avenue. Chef Weiss, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, bring eclectic New American fine dining to Hawthorne, with a focus on seasonal American dishes. F1rst, open only a year, has been named one of the 40 best restaurants in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly magazine, and is featured in the August 2024 issue. Congratulations, Chef!

I have been in communication with NJ Transit regarding the deplorable condition of our train station. NJ Transit has begun a clean-up of the parking lot the platform area, and the shelters. NJ Transit is working with PSE&G to install new LED lights in the parking lot to make the area brighter and safer.

We are still waiting for our tax rate by the County. As soon as we have the numbers, our tax bills will be printed and mailed to you; we will keep you informed as soon as we hear. The grace period will, of course, be extended.

On Monday we sent out a Nixle regarding water bills that were mailed out. The Nixle noted each water route, when it is due, and instructions on how to find out online what your water bill is and how much is owed should you not receive your bill. Going forward, we will send out a Nixle on a Monday noting what routes have been billed.

Last Saturday our community was treated to a concert on our library grounds courtesy of our Neighborhood Preservation Program; Jefferson Place was closed for the festivities. We had a nice crowd who were treated to a great music experience. This Saturday, July 27, Hawthorne will again have a new type of musical event in our downtown district: strolling musician Brendan Anthony will be performing in and around our pocket park between 4pm and 7pm (at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Diamond Bridge Avenue). You will have the pleasure of hearing the great sounds of music as you stroll downtown, visit the local stores and restaurants, or take in a movie. Look for special offers from stores and restaurants during that time.
