The Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council has selected Amari Caldwell as its March Character in Action award recipient.

Caldwell is a seventh-grade student at Hayneville Middle School. She was nominated by her teachers, Jaleesa Pettway and Asia Jones, for her positive attitude and dedication to her studies.

“We had the pleasure of meeting Amari last school year,” teachers said. “Amari has been a pleasure to teach since the start of school.”

According to Lowndes County District Judge Adrian Johnson, the council began the awards program to highlight students who displayed good character in the classroom and in their community. As chairman of the council and presiding judge over the county’s juvenile court, Johnson described how often he encounters youths after they are in trouble for their behavior.

He said the program was designed to encourage positive behaviors and head off trouble before it starts.

Jones and Pettway said they love inspiring young minds and work as educators to assist children in finding a love of learning and a conviction in their own abilities which leads them on the path to success.

“It is very rewarding watching our students learn, grow and excel as they complete their academic journeys,” the teachers said. “Amari works extremely hard to maintain academic excellence. All of Amari’s teachers adore her and her drive. She comes to school prepared and eager to learn.”

Award recipients receive a certificate, a program t-shirt and a $50 Walmart gift card from the council. The council selects one student to award each month, then honors the winners at an end of the year banquet.
