New bill would require Alabamians acquire permit before carrying assault weapons
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A new bill filed recently would require Alabamians to obtain a permit to carry assault weapons, either on their person or in their vehicle. Filed by Rep. Kenyatte Hassell, D-Montgomery, House Bill 23 defines an assault weapon as a semiautomatic rifle with the capacity to accept detachable magazines that possess at least one of six attributes, among them being a folding stock or second handgrip.

The Humane Society of Elmore County and the CARE Humane Society in Lee County have made temporary changes to their adoption and intake processes.

GCHS Student Trained for a Future in Economic and Community Development
Montgomery, AL – Carliegh Lipscomb, a rising senior at Gadsden City High School, was one of twenty-five high school seniors to attend the fifth Huntingdon College Economic and Community Development Scholars Program. The two-day, one-night immersive experience took place on the historic Huntingdon College campus in Montgomery, AL. The program, sponsored by the Huntingdon College Presidential Scholars Program and the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, was designed to introduce young Alabama citizens to the importance of economic and community development in cities and the state.
Four Auburn alumni elected to Alabama Business Hall of Fame
Four alumni of Auburn University have recently been elected to the Alabama Business Hall of Fame class of 2024. Rob Burton of Birmingham, Alabama (Building Science ’79); Raymond J. Harbert of Birmingham, Alabama (Business ’82); Thomas A. Harris of Hope Hull, Alabama (Business ‘71); and Thomas H. Lowder of Birmingham, Alabama (Business ‘72) will be among seven honorees to be inducted in a Nov. 14 ceremony.
Roundup: Montgomery Whitewater ranks on Time’s “Worlds’s Greatest Places 2024” list
Montgomery Whitewater, a kayaking and rafting water park facility in Montgomery, has been placed on Time magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places 2024” list. The list was published on July 24 and includes 50 places in total, highlighting Alabama as having one of only three whitewater facilities in the country. Montgomery Whitewater has been operating since July 2023 and was designed by former Olympic kayaker Scott Shipley with a mission of providing accessible facilities for not only paddling but trails in green spaces, surfing and summer camps for children. The park is also sustainable, using a backwash recovery system to recycle and filter the 12 million gallons of water that fuel the rapids. Future plans for the park include activities such as rock climbing, ziplining and mountain biking.
