The Hays Larks were dominant this summer in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League and they have brought that momentum with them to Wichita.

The Larks polished off a 3-0 start to the National Baseball Congress World Series with a 9-0 win over Lonestar (Texas) Baseball on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.

In winning Pool D, Hays scored at least eight runs in each of its three games and outscored its competition by 20 (28-8). That earned the Larks a first-round bye in the single-elimination bracket, where they will wait to play the winner between Tulsa Sandlot and San Diego Stars in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Tuesday’s performance was particularly impressive, as three different pitchers combined to toss a four-hit shutout of a Lonestar team that had won its two prior games in pool play.

But Hays starter Nolan Wilson, a pitcher for Houston Christian, continued his strong summer with yet another quality outing. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight hitters. Wilson finished 5-0 with a 3.31 ERA this summer for the Larks in league play.

The explosive offense also continued for Hays, as Houston’s Thomas Lyssy (.556 batting average in Wichita) furthered his hot streak with two hits on Tuesday to go along with two RBIs and three runs scored. Will Carpenter (Ohio State) and Taber Stokes (Butler Community College) each collected three doubles and three RBIs against Lonestar.

Pool play was completed following Tuesday’s games, as the single-elimination bracket was officially set. Each of the four winners in pool play advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals with a first-round bye, while the second and third seeds in pool play will face off in an elimination game at Eck Stadium on Wednesday.
