High waters cause Clinton Lake closures; specialist offers safety tips

Kansas quarterback Cole Ballard's continued growth gets praise from coach Lance Leipold
LAWRENCE — As quarterback Cole Ballard approaches his redshirt freshman season with Kansas football, there are areas in which his head coach thinks he can improve. Speaking last week at Big 12 Conference media days in Las Vegas, Lance Leipold indicated Ballard needs to continue to develop an understanding on when and when not to take chances. Leipold pointed back to the Kansas State game last year, when injuries forced Ballard into a starting role. Although Ballard nearly helped KU to a win, Leipold mentioned there were times Ballard tried to make plays that weren’t there.
75th anniversary celebration of Kansas Merci Boxcar in Hays
This weekend, the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Kansas Merci Boxcar, a gift from France in appreciation of American support, will be celebrated. The ceremony, which will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Veteran's Park, 1305 Canterbury, will feature Mayor Shaun Musil, Governor Laura Kelly, and a guest speaker who will discuss the unique history of the boxcars.
BOE approves attorney contract and KASB policies
During Monday’s meeting, the USD 489 Board of Education reviewed its contract for the board attorney. Board attorney Bill Jeter said the contract has been in effect for nearly a decade. Before the contract, he was paid hourly and spent most of his time with the teacher and custodial union negotiations. However, when he was asked to start attending board meetings, a contract was set up for a flat rate for board meetings and work sessions rather than an hourly rate.
High winds topple trees in Hays overnight
Winds in Hays topped out at 66 mph Monday night, toppling trees and breaking tree limbs. Hays received 1.75 inches of rain, according to the K-State Ag Research Center. That brings Hays to 2.14 inches of rain for July and 13.14 inches of precipitation for the year. Hays averages 14.67 inches of rain by the end of July.
