Cadet Gavin Abric of Hayward graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in Highland Falls, New York. The Class of 2024 commencement ceremony was held on Saturday, May 25.

The class consisted of 1,036 graduating cadets, who completed an intense 47-month curriculum. Cadets are exposed to academic, military, and physical opportunities that develop them into leaders of character.

Gavin majored in Systems Engineering and graduated Cum Laude. The Latin term cum laude translates to “with honors” and designates those graduating in the top 20-35% of their class in overall standing (cadet performance score). He was presented an Academic Department Award and earned the Class of 2024 Sigma Six Green Belt certification for his study project and analysis that saved the Army about $500,000 in expenditures.

Gavin received the Distinguished Cadet Award for achieving a 3.770 or higher Quality Point Average, an index of a cadet’s performance in academic, military science, and physical education courses. The award consists of a Gold Star. He was recognized at the Superintendent’s Awards for Excellence and Achievement and Distinguished Cadet Awards Ceremony. Following graduation, the Commissioning and Bar Pinning Ceremony was held at Tate Rink, where Gavin was the goaltender for the Army Black Knights Hockey Team. Parents, Janeen and Gordon Abric proudly pinned lieutenant bars on the shoulders of Gavin in his Lieutenant Army Service Uniform with siblings Alexia, Connor and Logan by his side in support.

Gavin took the Oath of Office with Col. James Enos and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He received his first salute from teammate Cadet Andrew Gilbert.

The first salute is a tradition in which a newly commissioned officer gives a silver dollar to the person from whom they receive the first salute of their career. Gavin’s Post Assignment is 20th Engineer Brigade in Fort Stewart, Georgia.
