    Epic Bike restival draws over 1,000 racers

    Pro mountain bike racers familiar to the Hayward-Cable area won the Epic Bike Festival cross-country races hosted by the American Birkebeiner Foundation over the June 8-9 weekend. Riders were greeted by mostly sunny, cool weather and packy trails.

    Saturday featured the 37-mile single-track Sram Full Epic, which started on the Birkie Trail near Wheeler Road east of Hayward, and the 18-mile Half Epic, which started at the Birkie start line in the town of Cable.

    The Full Epic had 417 finishers and the Half Epic had 228 finishers. Both races finished at the new Mt. Telemark Village, on the site of the former Telemark coliseum.

    Daxton Mock of Lake Mills won the men’s Full Epic single track trail race on Saturday and also took first in the men’s division of the 50-mile gravel road race on Sunday. Veteran racer Jenna Reinhart of Mankato, Minnesota, won the women’s Full Epic single-track race on Saturday and also won the 50-mile gravel road race on Sunday.

    The gravel road races had 214 riders in the Full Epic and 228 riders in the Half Epic.

    Top men: Mason Wilson, Kalona, Iowa, 1:28:20; Rylan Zacharek, Sheboygan, 1:29:40; Ben Tesch, Minneapolis, 1:34:04; Ethan Leonard, Stoddard, 1:34:46; Ryder Schwaller, Plymouth, Wis., 1:35:04.
