    The Hayward Hurricanes track and field team traveled to La Crosse and competed with the best in the state championships June 1-2. “With a record number of Hayward athletes at the meet, it made for a great last hurrah for our track team,” said Coach Ben DiSera.

    Hurricane finishes included:

    GIRLS 4X200M RELAY — 11TH PLACE: Natalie Grubbs, Bri Hexum, Danika Kortendick, Avery Poppe.

    BOYS 4X800M RELAY — 13TH PLACE:

    Evan McConnell, Cade Schlapper, Austin Ewert, Ben Laird.

    GIRLS 4X800M RELAY — 13TH PLACE: Maria Halberg, Lola Olsen, Macey Reier, Lydia Bergschnieder

    GIRLS HIGH JUMP — 12TH PLACE: Helen Thompson

    GIRLS TRIPLE JUMP — 11TH PLACE: Avery Poppe

    BOYS 300M HURDLES — SECOND PLACE: Lucas Hansen

    “I was happy with the outcome of the state meet,” said Coach DiSera. “I’ve never brought this many athletes down to La Crosse before, so it was a great way to represent Hayward as a team.

    “Everyone competed hard and there were some events that could have gone better, but overall it was a great experience for our kids and they ended their seasons hungry for next year,” DiSera added.

    Hurricane team awards for the season were presented to:

    Avery Poppe: Girls MVP #1, Ms. Track & Field, Four-Time State Qualifier; Brianna Hexum: Girls MVP #2 Lucas Hansen — Boys MVP #1; Ben Laird — Boys MVP #2, Mr. Track & Field; Gannon Mohr — Eye of the Hurricane 2024; Evan McConnell — 2024 Rookie of the Year;
