The Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe will host their 51st annual Honor the Earth Homecoming Celebration and traditional pow wow Thursday through Sunday July 18-21 at Honor the Earth Park, on Round Lake School Road nine miles southeast of Hayward or four miles south of the Sevenwinds Casino off Highway K.

Traditional Native American music, dancing, crafts and food create an authentic tribal experience and are enjoyed by thousands of people each year.

The weekend will include four grand entries of dancers, at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

The pow wow also includes a youth royalty pageant and coronation at 5 p.m. Thursday, honoring of U.S. Armed Forces veterans at 10 a.m. Saturday, honoring of Rhonda Quagon as Anishinaabekwe (Woman of the Year) Saturday noon, and the pow wow dedication in honor of the Gary Taylor and Mike Taylor family at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Other events during pow wow weekend will include a Friday night drum contest, a Spirit Run-Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, fry bread and wild rice cooking contest in the LCO School cafeteria at 9 a.m. Saturday, and woodland and youth dance exhibitions Saturday and Sunday.

The host drum groups will be Lac Courte Oreilles Badgers and Pipestone. The Cozad singers (Kiowa) from Oklahoma are the special invited drum group. There will be numerous invited local and visiting drum groups.

The masters of ceremonies will be Michael “Migizi” Sullivan from LCO and Joey Ahonowopay from the Menominee Nation. Arena directors will be Michael Demain and R.J. Smith. Gary Quaderer Sr. is the head veteran. Joseph Nayquonabe Sr. is the spiritual advisor.

Much of the pow wow will be broadcast live on WOJB 88.9 FM, and on the internet at wojb.org.

Visitors are welcome. Pow wow entry buttons are $10 for the weekend, available at the gates. Entry is free for elders age 62 and older and children age seven and younger.

The Honor the Earth Pow Wow is sponsored by the LCO Honor the Earth Education Foundation, the LCO Tribal Governing Board and the LCO Ojibwe K-12 School.
