There’s been a shakeup atop the Independent League standings after the Haugen Knights traveled to Hayward Saturday and swept the Hawks by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

The Knights have now won four games in a row and are 6-3 in league play, tied with Brill for first place with three games remaining. The Millers do hold a 2-0 series lead on the Knights with a July 27 game between the two teams the final regular season contest.

Hayward was 5-0 entering the week but also suffered a loss to Spooner on Friday and is now half-game back of both Haugen and Brill.

Travis Thompson pitched a seven-inning complete game with just one earned run scoring in the 6-2 game one victory for Haugen. He struck out eight and allowed five hits.

After going scoreless in the first two innings, Haugen scored in each of the next five frames. Darek Dieckman went 3 for 4, while Nolan Rowe and Cole Paulson were each 2 for 4. Vaughn Johnson had hit and scored two runs.

Haugen pitchers Callub Paulson and Christian Lindon shut down Hayward in game two. In six innings Callub Paulson only had one unearned run score as he allowed five hits and struck out one. Lindow punched out two in a scoreless seventh.

The Knights scored two runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Reid Olson was 4 for 4 with a run scored. Thompson and Rowe each had two hits. Rowe scored two runs as did Cole Paulson, who walked twice in three plate appearance.

The Knights return to action Friday night at home with the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. against the Blue Hills Beasts.

    Brill tops Blue Hills

An eight-run inning was plenty of offense as the Millers won their third straight and completed the season sweep of the Beasts with a 15-4 win Friday night in Bruce.

Brill scored eight times in the third inning on just one hit as eight walks gave the Millers plenty of base runners. Tyson LaPoint had a two-RBI double in the frame.

A Kirby Brunclik triple plated two more in the fifth, and then he scored on an RBI ground out from Logan Hile as Brill led 11-0 after five innings.

Blue Hills scored all of its runs in the sixth. After Hile had worked five innings for Brill, giving up just two hits and striking out seven, LaPoint took over in relief. The Beasts managed five hits and four runs against LaPoint in the sixth to make it an 11-4 game.

An RBI infield single from Josh Halverson tacked on a Millers’ run in the seventh, and in the ninth Brill scored three more times, including a Rece Dietrich RBI single for the final tally.

LaPoint had pitched a scoreless seventh and finished his two innings with three punch outs. Joe Serbiak sent down the Beasts in the eighth with one strikeout.

Brunclik finished the game 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Halverson had a hit and drew four walks, scoring three times. LaPoint was 1 for 3 with three walks, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Brill plays Wednesday night at Hayward and then the Millers host the Hawks on Saturday at noon.
