The Hayward Hawks left numerous runners on base in a doubleheader loss to the Haugen Knights Saturday July 13 at Larry Somerville Field, dropping two games by scores of 2-6 and 1-6.

The Hawks were missing several players from their usual line-up for the twin bill. To fill the gap, Jason Rasmussen came in for the first time this year to play third base, and Hayward Hurricanes player Tyler Eaton was the catcher.

The Hawks also came up short against the Spooner Cardinals Friday July 12 at Merchants Park, losing 8-12. Hayward pitchers issued 10 walks and hit five batters during the game.

The three losses last week dropped the Hawks’ record to 5-3 in Independent League play and 8-5 overall.

The Hawks play the Brill Millers twice this week: at home Wednesday evening and at Brill Saturday noon. They return home to play Team Fadness Saturday evening.

Last Friday in Spooner, Nate Harrison started on the mound for the Hawks and Jeremy Bloomquist started for the Cardinals.

The Hawks scored three runs on four consecutive hits in the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3. Tom Danczyk beat out a single, Austin Wessel doubled, Phil Zeigle singled to drive in two runs, Terry Kilmer doubled and Micah Bacon hit a sacrifice fly to bring Zeigle home.

The Cardinals took a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Harrison threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and two earned runs, striking out four, walking six and hitting four batters.

Ethan Wessel came in to pitch for Hayward with two out in the fifth and threw 1 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and four earned runs.

The Hawks scored a run in the sixth to get within 4-7, as Austin Wessel singled and scored on a single by Kilmer. The Cardinals scored four runs on three hits in the sixth to take a 11-4 lead.

The Hawks added a run on a bases loaded walk in the seventh, and scored four runs with four consecutive walks in the ninth to make the final score closer. Austin Wessel doubled, Micah Bacon got an RBI on a ground out and Matt Flesher, Jonah Sande and Josh Kanters all walked to bring in three runs.

The Hawks finished with 11 hits, no errors and 11 runners left on base, while the Cardinals had six hits, three errors and 11 runners stranded. Spooner improved to 6-5 on the season.

Jonah Sande started for the Hawks in Saturday’s first game against Haugen, while Travis Thompson started for the Knights. The visitors scored a run in the first inning and another in the second.

The Hawks scored a run in the fourth on walks by Bacon and Kyle Cummings and a single by Rasmussen. In their half of the fourth, the Knights took a 4-1 lead on a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly. They added a run on thee hits in the fifth and another run in the seventh on a walk, fielder’s choice and single.

The Hawks scored a run in the seventh on a double by Josh Kanters and a single by Phil Zeigle to get within four at 2-6. They finished the inning with the bases loaded.

Sande gave up 10 hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out three.

In game two, the starting pitchers were Phil Zeigle for the Hawks and Cole Paulson for the Knights.

Hayward took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Tom Danczyk reached base on an error, Zeigle and Kilmer singled to load the bases and Cummings walked to bring in a run. That would prove to be the only run of the game for the Hawks.

The Knights took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on two singles and an infield error. They added two runs in the fourth on two hits and a walk to go ahead 4-1.

Cummings came in to pitch for the Hawks in the sixth. The Knights scored two more runs on three walks, a wild pitch and a single.

Chris Lindau finished the game on the mound for Haugen.

Hayward finished the game with six hits, one error and nine left on base, while Haugen had eight hits, one error and eight runners stranded.

Independent League standings: Brill Millers, 6-3; Haugen Knights, 6-3; Hayward Hawks, 5-3; Spooner Cardinals, 4-5; Blue Hills Beasts, 0-7.
