Hayward Community School Board members on Monday July 15 approved hours and fees for community members to use the newly-constructed Tamarack Health Fitness Center at the high school.

The weight room, cardio/walking track and courts will be open from 8 a.m. to noon and 6-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7-10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The cardio/walking track also will be open from 6-7 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

District community education director Meredith Ingbretson said the goal is to open the new fitness center to the public in mid-August. The weight room is now being used by student athletes.

The membership fee pricing varies for families (two or more persons), adults and seniors (62-plus), by month, quarter or year. For example, the fee for a person 62-plus living in the school district is $30 per month, $82.50 per quarter or $300 per year.

The fees are higher for nonresidents ($40, $110 and $400 respectively for persons 62 and older). For the complete list, see the school district website.

In other actions Monday, the board:

Approved a contract with the City of Hayward to provide two School Resource Officers (SROs) for 2024-25. The sworn police officers will work 186 days during the school year when students are present. The contract also has been approved by the Hayward City Council.

Voted to purchase new Daktronics scoreboards for the varsity football field, varsity baseball field and high school gym (which will have video). The school district has received five anchor sponsorships of $25,000 each and will use its fund balance to pay for the rest of the cost.

    4) Amended the co-curricular salary schedule to add the social media coordinator, who now is Mary Hager.

    5) Received a letter of resignation from Zach Noreen, middle school special education paraprofessional; and approved the transfer of Deborah Skweres from middle school special education teacher to high school special education.

    6) Voted to hire Reidun Bures as high school C-team volleyball coach. She replaces Caitlyn LeBlanc, who has moved to assistant team coach.

    4) Approved a report for the DPI (Department of Public Instruction) that Hayward students attended school 173 days this past school year. There were two snow days.

    5) Hayward Center for Individualized Learning (HACIL) charter school assistant administrator Brooke Marienfeld reported that they have enrolled 196 returning students for the coming school year, with 77 new applicants and 23 on the waiting list.

The Northern Waters Environmental School (NWES) has 43 students, of whom 22 are in middle school and 21 in high school.

    6) Received a donation of $411.64 from Northern Lakes Cenex from sales at their Hurricane Pride gas pump in May.
