A Hayward man is accused of possessing more than 11 grams of methamphetamine with the intention of delivering the drug after a traffic stop on Highway 53 between Cameron and Rice Lake.

Nathan W. Rickards, 42, was charged on Wednesday in Barron County Circuit Court with a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, second or subsequent offense. Two misdemeanors of possession of drug paraphernalia and another of operating while revoked also were filed.

If convicted on the felony, Rickards could be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to as many as 25 years in prison. He is slated to make an initial appearance on Wednesday and is free on a $10,000 signature bond with conditions that say he may not possess or consume controlled substances or drug paraphernalia.

According to the criminal complaint, Rickards was pulled over on July 23 as his vehicle had stolen plates on it.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies found several different glass items and a small digital scale that had a white substance on it that field-tested positive for meth.

At the jail, a search of Rickards’ pants revealed a large bag possessing multiple empty gem bags and three small plastic bags that contained a white powder substance, a dirty glass ball pipe, and a cut straw.

The substance was field tested and came back positive for the presence of meth. The total weight of the suspected meth was 11.655 grams.

According to state Department of Transportation records, Rickards’ driver’s license had been revoked on Aug. 29, 2023, for an indefinite period of time for noncompliance with an assessment that stemmed from an operating while intoxicated conviction from the Rice Lake Municipal Court on April 25, 2023.
