1 dead after head-on crash in construction zone on western Wisconsin highway
HAUGEN, Wis. — Authorities in western Wisconsin say one person is dead and another seriously injured after a crash in a construction zone that shut down a highway for hours Wednesday evening.The Barron County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 53 a half-mile south of 28th Avenue at 5:23 p.m.According to the initial investigation, a minivan had been passing other northbound vehicles in the wrong lane of traffic when it struck a southbound sedan towing a motorcycle trailer. Due to construction, traffic was bidirectional in the northbound lanes of Highway 53 with delineator posts down the double-yellow center line, the sheriff's office says.The driver of the sedan died while the minivan driver was transported by LifeLink to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries, authorities say.The identity of the deceased will be released at a later time.The crash is under investigation.
Lincoln Hills consent decree at middle of statehouse fight
(The Center Square) – Just days after a Republican lawmaker said Wisconsin’s prison managers have lost control of the youth prison at Lincoln Hills, there is now an effort to end the facility’s federal consent decree. More than a dozen Republicans in both the State Senate and State Assembly signed a letter last week to the head of the state’s Department of Corrections, asking him to go to court and “revisit” the decree that limits guards and the Lincoln Hills facility. ...
Report: Wisconsin state park use remains high since COVID-19 pandemic boom
When businesses shuttered and schools went remote during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Wisconsin residents flocked to parks and nature trails across the state. Now, a new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum found that Wisconsinites are still using state parks at higher rates than before the start of the pandemic. The report found there were 518,848 state park sticker sales recorded in 2023, up from 346,491 in 2019 — a nearly 50 percent increase.
