Over the weekend Naismith Hall of Famer and basketball legend Allen Iverson decided he was in the mood for some football. There was no better place to pop up for the Newport News native than in his birth city of Hampton, Virginia. Iverson was in attendance when the Pirates opened their season against Morgan State, a game they would ultimately lose 30-28 to their northern rivals.
Iverson didn’t seem to be at the game for any official ceremony. The Hampton football account simply posted a picture of Iverson from Saturday’s game to its social media accounts on Monday.
Allen Iverson’s deep-rooted connections to the Hampton and Newport News area in Virginia are a significant part of his legendary basketball story. Born on June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia, Iverson grew up in the nearby city of Newport News, where he developed into one of the most electrifying athletes in sports history.
Iverson became a local hero in both football and basketball while attending Bethel High School in Hampton. Iverson’s talent was evident from a young age, and his skills in both sports made him a standout in the local community. As a quarterback in football, he led Bethel to a state championship. His performance on the basketball court was equally spectacular, leading Bethel to another state title and establishing himself as one of the top prospects in the country. The gymnasium at his former school is now named in his honor.
The Newport News and Hampton communities rallied behind Iverson during his rise to fame, especially during a difficult period in 1993 when he was involved in a controversial bowling alley altercation that led to his arrest and a prison sentence. The conviction was later overturned, and Iverson received a second chance at his athletic career—a moment many in the Hampton Roads area view as pivotal. The experience strengthened Iverson’s bond with his hometown, as he often spoke about how the people from his community stood by him during one of the lowest points in his life.
