One week after surrendering 70 points to an SEC squad, HBCU Arkansas-Pine Bluff recorded a 70-plus game of its own.

Arkansas-Pine Buff took out its frustration on Arkansas Baptist — an NAIA squad — with a 73-0 win in its home opener. This comes one week after it lost 70-0 to Arkansas of the SEC.

The Golden Lions accumulated 320 yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns in the lopsided victory. Standout performances included Oshawn Ross, who rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and Johness Davis, who added two touchdowns. UAPB’s defense also shined, forcing four interceptions and holding Arkansas Baptist to just 161 total yards of offense.

Mehki Hagens keyed UAPB’s offense on Saturday.

Quarterback Mekhi Hagens led UAPB’s passing game, completing 15 of 26 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with JaVonnie Gibson for a 54-yard score.

The Golden Lions scored in all phases of the game, including a 38-yard field goal from Braden Ducharme just before halftime.

SEC squad Arkansas put up 70 on UAPB in the season opener.

Arkansas Baptist struggled against the relentless UAPB defense, gaining only 79 rushing yards and 82 passing yards. UAPB won the turnover battle 6-1 after intercepting four passes and recovering two fumbles.

UAPB will take on its first FCS and HBCU opponent of the season when it travels to Memphis to take on Tennessee State in the Southern Heritage Classic.
