Jackson State University has introduced a new policy requiring media outlets to purchase credentials to record their famous marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South, during home games. According to the guidelines, media outlets looking to exclusively capture footage of the band or the visiting band must pay for proper access, with regular credentials costing $300.

For media outlets intending to stream the footage live, the fee rises to $500. Failure to comply with this policy may result in immediate dismissal from stadium grounds.

The policy outlines strict rules regarding media interaction with the band. Media members are not permitted to film within the band or disrupt performances, including interactions with banner carriers, drum majors, dancers, and directors. Filming is allowed from designated areas in the “horseshoe” and cannot take place on the field. Field-level footage is restricted to outside the press box, and media must maintain a 5-foot distance from the sidelines without encroaching on the band’s space.

Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South emphasized that the policy aims to support their students while also providing financial benefits to the program. They noted that their program brings significant viewership and revenue to media outlets, justifying the new fees. Jackson State University hopes this new initiative will be embraced by the media as they explore opportunities to further support the band and showcase the hard work of their students. Payments must be received three days before the event to secure credentials.
