At the HBCU NY Classic press conference, Morehouse College head coach Terance Mathis dropped an intriguing hint about the possible future of the school’s football program. Mathis hinted during the presser that the program might be thinking about moving from Division II to Division I, which is a topic that always has fans excited, especially the possible connection between the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) one of the most storied HBCUs in the country.

When asked if the team was preparing for a leap to Division I, Mathis responded, “Yes, there has been talk about moving up, and we’re preparing ourselves for that. If that is the future of this program, we’ll be ready when it happens.”

While rumors are flying on social media about Morehouse possibly joining the MEAC, Mathis kept the focus on his team’s current progress. He spoke about the deeper changes happening within the program. “These young men, they play for each other. They run through fire for each other. They won’t quit, no matter the score,” Mathis said. “They truly love each other, and we talk about loving and trusting each other.”

If Morehouse College moves to Division 1, it would be a huge moment for the school and HBCU sports. However, Mathis made it clear that his job is to prepare the team for the future, no matter what happens. “We always talk about being one body. If someone in that body isn’t on the same page, we won’t succeed,” he said.

For Terance Mathis, the program’s success isn’t just about moving divisions—it’s about building a strong bond between the players, coaches, and staff. “Everyone has to speak the same language, move in the same direction, and work together for this to be successful,” he explained.

Though there’s plenty of talk about Morehouse joining the MEAC, no official announcement has been made. For now, Mathis is focused on making sure his team is ready for whatever comes next. “My job is to make this program better for the future, and if moving to Division 1 is part of that, we’ll be ready,” he said.

If Morehouse does join the MEAC, it would renew the Black Ivy League rivalry with Howard University, another one of the most celebrated HBCUs in the country. Whether or not Morehouse joins the MEAC or another Division I conference, Coach Mathis is building a program that’s unified and ready for the challenges ahead.
