WSSU dominant early in win over Bowie State

In a pivotal CIAA matchup on September 28, 2024, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) defeated Bowie State University (BSU) 28-14 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC. The game was marked by a strong offensive performance from WSSU, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Bowie State struck first with a 16-yard rushing touchdown by Sam Doku, capping a 56-yard drive, but WSSU responded swiftly in the second quarter. A 65-yard touchdown pass from Daylin Lee to Jayden Grimes tied the game. WSSU then added two more touchdowns before halftime— a 2-yard rush by Trevon Hester and a 9-yard pass from Lee to Kaleb Washington—taking a 21-7 lead into the break.

In the fourth quarter, WSSU extended their lead when Lee threw his third touchdown of the game, connecting with Devin Cunningham for a 27-yard score. BSU mounted a late response with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Taylor to Carlos Smith, but it was too little, too late.

Statistically, WSSU’s efficiency stood out despite BSU’s 33:35 edge in time of possession. Lee threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns, with Grimes leading the receiving corps with 79 yards and a score. Hester was the standout on the ground with 76 yards rushing.

Defensively, WSSU dominated with five sacks and two interceptions, thwarting BSU’s offense. Despite the loss, BSU’s Curtis Murray was effective on the ground with 41 rushing yards. The loss dropped Bowie State to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA.

WSSU’s balanced attack and strong defense propelled them to another key conference win as they look to build on their successful start to the 2024 season. WSSU has won three games in a row with its sole loss coming to FCS rival North Carolina A&T in overtime.
