ESPN First Take made its second HBCU stop of the season at Tennessee State University on Friday, and it was a memorable one.

The show marked the debut of former NFL MVP Cam Newton as a commentator. It was announced on Thursday that Newton would be joining the show, which stars Stephen A Smith and features Shannon Sharpe multiple days per week.

It also featured a personal touch with Tennessee State University’s own NFL legend, head coach Eddie George.

George joined Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe on ESPN First Take Friday morning to talk about his program, which is currently 4-2 overall. The former Tennessee Titans running back was asked about what his experience has been like by Smith, who went to Winston-Salem State University.

“You see the love. There’s nothing like HBCU love. Big Blue is strong. We’re vibrant. The energy has always been right.”

The former Heisman Trophy winner and star NFL running back spoke about what has impacted him about his HBCU experience since taking over the football program in 2021.

“I went to a PWI, Ohio State, that was great. But to have a chance to work here on a day-to-day basis — it’s different. It’s family oriented. You know people by a first-name basis. You’re hangin out on the yard. You’re having drinks — or you’re having lemonade,” George said, sharing a laugh with Stephen A. Shannon Sharpe.

That’s been the biggest difference. It’s one big family. You know they’re going to call you out on your stuff, they’re going to hold you accountable. We hold each other accountable. We build each other up. And that’s been a wonderful experience.”

Tennessee State University will take on Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

ESPN First Take started its HBCU tour with Howard University last month. It will visit the AUC in November.
